What is tapioca?
Tapioca is a gluten-free type of starch that comes from the cassava root! You can buy it in the shape of pearls, or as a type of flour. The tapioca pearls are hard and can have several colors, but are originally white. The taste is neutral and has the special ability to adapt to other flavors. Tapioca flour is gluten-free and can be used in buns, cakes, wraps, muffins, and much, much more!
What are tapioca pearls?
Tapioca pearls are available in several colors and sizes. They are hard and light and can be used in many desserts. When cooked, their texture changes from hard to soft and chewy. Thanks to the popular bubble tea drink, these pearls have gained popularity all over the world.
How to cook tapioca pearls
- Bring some water to boil
- Add the tapioca pearls
- Keep stirring to keep it from sticking to the pan until the pearls start to float
- Then cook on medium heat for about 30-45 minutes (depending on pearl size)
- Stir occasionally
- Turn off the heat and let it sit for another 30 minutes with the lid on the pan
- Drain the water
- Wash under cool running water
- Add some sugar for a sweet taste
- They are ready for your bubble tea!
How to use tapioca pearls in bubble tea
Once you have cooked your tapioca pearls, it is time to make bubble tea! Just brew some black tea for about 5 minutes. Then let it cool for a while and extract the tea from the water. Add some ice to the tea to let it cool. Put 2 teaspoons of brown sugar, and three teaspoons of white sugar in a small pan with 3 teaspoons of water. Heat it up and stir until it is dissolved. Add the pearls, the sugar syrup, the tea, some milk and ice cubes to a glass and you are ready to drink!
